The Importance of Sun Safety for Kids During Summer

Following sun safety suggestions for kids during the summer months is crucial because, during these lazy/hazy days of summer, children are generally exposed more to harmful UV rays (ultraviolet) from the sun. According to Dr. Arturo Quintanilla of Rancho Mirage Pediatrics, which serves the communities surrounding Rancho Mirage, CA, when kids are outdoors during warmer months, it's important to protect their skin from excessive UV rays exposure. Without protection, a host of problems can occur, such as skin cancer, skin damage and aging, and eye injury.

Reasons Why Sun Safety Is Important

The following are some of the important reasons why sun safety is essential:

  • It helps avoid sunburns; a child’s skin tends to be more sensitive to UV radiation than that of an adult. Additionally, sunburns can be painful and increase your risk of skin damage.
  • It helps avoid ailments related to heat. Proper sun safety protocols, which include consistent hydration and avoiding peak sun levels and hours, can help prevent heat-related illnesses like heat exhaustion and heatstroke.
  • It helps reduce skin cancer risk. UV exposure, especially during one’s growing years, can increase the chance of developing skin cancer as one ages. Protecting children from too much sun can lessen this risk.
  • It helps protect children’s eyes – young individual’s eyes are vulnerable to UV rays. Wearing sunglasses offers protection from UV radiation, which can lead to eye damage in time.

Sun Safety Tips

Children need to stay hydrated by drinking water throughout the day. This is particularly important when playing outside in the heat. In addition, the following tips are also helpful -

  • Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen (minimum SPF 30) to all exposed skin about 15–30 minutes before going in the sun. Reapply sunscreen every two hours or more often when sweating or swimming.
  • Wear Protective Clothing – It is essential to cover as much skin as you can; dress children in lightweight, long-sleeved clothing  (with an Ultraviolet Protection Factor label) and wide-brimmed hats.
  • Seek Shaded Play Areas/Parks - Encourage kids to play in the shade, especially during peak sun hours (i.e., 10 AM to 4 PM). Consider using umbrellas or other structures at the beach/park.
  • Wear Sunglasses - Proper eye protection can block 100% of UVA and UVB rays that may cause sun damage.
